Like many others, Elliott Smith’s suicide prompted me to pull out some of his albums. Frankly, they work entirely too well as the soundtrack to a tragedy. I saw Smith a few times, and while some of his shows involved upbeat rock-y arrangements that undermined the intimacy of his songs, but the solo show he played at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis three years ago was perfect. I used to find his beautiful and sad music cathartic when I was feeling bad, but I doubt that will work anymore.
