The Turing-Pollard Test
In case the endless supply of Guided By Voices music isn’t enough to amuse you, here is a game that will let you determine if it is possible to differentiate between Bob Pollard and a machine.
Pick a number between 1 and 812. Then go to the GBV Database, and look up the song associated with that number. Next, use the GBV song title generator and generate a random GBV-sounding song title. See if your friends can determine which is the real one. For example, which of the following is a real track from a GBV side project: ‘Storm Father Dominant Anthem’ or ‘Exploratory Rat Fink Committee’? How about ‘Mosquitoes Dropped Their Javelins’ or ‘Battling To Spank Aircraft’? Would you believe Bob coined the song ‘Commonwealth Tail Gunner’ or ‘Kickboxer Lightning’? Feel free to amuse yourselves.
As an aside, I was sitting in my burrito place the other day when GBV’s classic ‘Hardcore UFOs’ started playing in the restaurant, followed by a lovely instrumental version of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. And the burrito quality is similar to that of the music. It almost makes up for my lack of a Chipotle.
